2025 Sets a New All-Time High for Renewable Energy Production in Portugal, according to REN
According to a news report published earlier this year by TSF, based on data released by Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN), 2025 marked a new record for renewable energy production in Portugal, reaching a total of 37 TWh. At the same time, the country also recorded its highest-ever electricity consumption supplied through the public grid.
TSF reports that “total consumption reached 53.1 TWh over the year, representing a 3.2% increase compared to the previous year, or 2.3% when adjusted for temperature effects and the number of working days.”
In terms of renewable energy sources, hydropower led the way, accounting for 27% of national consumption, followed by wind (25%), solar (11%), and biomass (5%).
One of the most significant figures to highlight is that renewable energy represented 68% of total consumption, another all-time high for the country. This milestone confirms that Portugal is on the right path, with an increasingly solid commitment to renewables as its main source of energy production.
That said, this progress also challenges us to think on a larger scale. The goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 still requires a collective effort, continuous investment, innovation, and an even more ambitious approach, also at the national level.
